Rochester Toyota has received a limited number of repair parts and will be commencing with the repair procedure on Thursday, February 4th. Please feel free to email or telephone us for instructions on vehicle scheduling. We expect an extremely high call volume so your patience is greatly appreciated.

Rochester Toyota will have staff available during normal business hours 6:45 – 6:00 for the remainder of the week. We will be investigating extended hours and possibly Sunday hours as the repair progresses.

In the rare case that you do not feel comfortable driving your car to the dealership Rochester Toyota will arrange to have your vehicle picked up and returned. If you take advantage of this service, please allow us to have your vehicle for a few hours to coordinate the logistics of this service.

We will be providing some treats and fresh brewed Caribou coffee during the peak of the recall. We will also provide all recall owners with a Complimentary Car Wash upon completion of the recall.

You truly are the VERY BEST customers in the WORLD and we greatly appreciate your patience during this recall. We have received a MASSIVE amount of support from our owner group and much praise about how we are handling this situation.

Message from Rochester Toyota Service:

February 1st, 2010

Rochester Toyota vows to remedy the accelerator pedal condition in a timely manner. We will work in conjunction with Toyota Motor Corporation and the NHTSA to perform the remedy as outlined below.

Rochester Toyota has not yet received a repair procedure or parts, but we are assured that the repair process is moving forward. We will update vehicle owners as we receive more information.

Rochester Toyota is investigating the best course of action to properly conduct the repair procedure. We will consider such measures as; extended service hours, Sunday hours and remote repair. As always we are open to suggestions on how vehicle owners would prefer to have the remedy completed. Please feel free to contact Rochester Toyota  *here* if you have a suggestion for a preferred scheduling method.

How Toyota Will Fix Recalled Vehicles

Toyota has pinpointed the issue that could, on rare occasions, cause accelerator pedals in recalled vehicles to stick in a partially open position.  The issue involves a friction device in the pedal designed to provide the proper “feel” by adding resistance and making the pedal steady and stable.  The device includes a shoe that rubs against an adjoining surface during normal pedal operation.  Due to the materials used, wear and environmental conditions, these surfaces may, over time, begin to stick and release instead of operating smoothly.  In some cases, friction could increase to a point that the pedal is slow to return to the idle position or, in rare cases, the pedal sticks, leaving the throttle partially open.

Toyota’s solution for current owners is both effective and simple.  A precision-cut steel reinforcement bar will be installed into the assembly that will reduce the surface tension between the friction shoe and the adjoining surface.  With this reinforcement in place, the excess friction that can cause the pedal to stick is eliminated.  The company has confirmed the effectiveness of the newly reinforced pedals through rigorous testing on pedal assemblies that had previously shown a tendency to stick.

Separately from the recall for sticking accelerator pedals, Toyota is in the process of recalling vehicles to address rare instances in which floor mats have trapped the accelerator pedal in certain Toyota and Lexus models (announced November 25, 2009), and is already notifying customers about how it will fix this issue.  In the case of vehicles covered by both recalls, it is Toyota’s intention to remedy both at the same time.

Video deomonstration of pedal assembly

January 30th, 2010

This is good video. It explains EXACTLY what the pedal corrosion problem is. Toyota doesn’t yet know if it’s only a few cars exhibiting this, or widespread, until they get them all back in for repairs. This bushing wear is not a symptom that shows up in a low mileage vehicle, this is something that wears out and\or corrodes over time. It is 1 of 2 of their pedal assembly manufacturers exhibiting the problem of wearing out.

But in the interest of safety, Toyota will be bringing them ALL back.
